Warning Siren Activation

In order to clarify and educate residents of the City of Waukesha concerning the activation of the weather warning sirens, policy parameters have been developed. These parameters were adopted by the Waukesha Common Council in 1998 and mirror the policy adopted by the Waukesha County Office of Emergency Management.

Activating the Sirens
The weather warning sirens will be activated under the following conditions:
  • Tornado is on the ground, which is an immediate threat to the City of Waukesha
  • Funnel cloud is aloft, posing an imminent threat to the City of Waukesha and is reported by a reliable source
  • High winds or large hail causing property damage and posing an immediate threat to the health and safety of the City of Waukesha
  • Police Department shift commander determines that weather conditions are posing a threat to the health, safety, and property of city residents
During Activation
Once the weather warning sirens are activated, they will continue to be sounded every 15 minutes until the Police Department receives an "All Clear" notification from the National Weather Service.

Ending the Siren
Once an "All Clear" is received, there is no audible signal that indicates that the particular threat has ended. The on-duty shift commander at the Police Department has the discretion to discontinue the sounding of the weather warning sirens based upon reliable information that is currently available.

Siren Testing
The City of Waukesha tests its weather warning sirens at 9:30 a.m. every Friday, beginning with the first Friday of April and ending with the first Friday of October. The weekly test of the weather warning sirens will not occur if threatening weather is possible.

Emergency Alert System
The Waukesha Police Department also utilizes the City of Waukesha Emergency Alert System that provides an override feature on the local cable television system to verbally warn residents of severe and threatening weather that is approaching the City.
